Adult ADHD – The Good and The Bad Of Being An Adult With ADHD
Article by R.D. Hawkins
Bob is not your typical advertising executive and is considered to be one of the most successful in the business. He has come up with some of the most highly rated advertisements in history and should be well liked by most of co-workers yet he has few friends, tends to change advertising agencies regularly, has the reputation in the industry as being disorganized and difficult to work with, and is working on his fourth marriage.
Could our advertising genius Bob be one of the 5 percent of adults with this disorder?
It is certainly a possibility. Both children and adults with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) think differently. Some might say they are great at thinking outside of the box and terrible at thinking inside of the box. This is thought to be due to an imbalance in the brain chemical messengers dopamine and norepinephrine along with a genetic abnormality in brain synapses and other brain hard wiring.
Factoid: Almost six out of ten adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder come from families where one or both parent also have the disorder.
If you put one ADHD adult and one non ADHD adult in a room and asked them to solve an equation chances are their approaches to the solution would be as different as night and day. The convention approach would be embraced and applauded in structured problem solving environments (schools, strictly structured companies and professions) while the ADHD approach would probably be ridiculed as inefficient or lucky. They may also be classified as a loose cannon who just isn’t willing to stick with the status quo.
Let’s look at a zany example involving a police officer. Let’s say you were being pulled over for speeding and were expecting to see the officer slowly pull up behind you, sit in his car for a few minutes, and then slowly make his way up to your car window to ask for your driver’s license and proof of insurance. But instead he races up behind you, slams on the brakes, jumps out of his car, slides over the hood, asks for your license and proof of insurance and then runs back to his police cruiser. After a few minutes he returns, only to find he has forgotten your divers license, which he has misplaced somewhere under the fast food wrapper in his cruiser. After he retrieves your license he simply tells you to drive off because you just weren’t quite interesting enough to deserve a ticket.
Framing ADHD in a positive way
Adults with ADHD tend to be spontaneous, relying on what they may call instinct, and generally don’t have a problem making a snap decision derived solely from a gut feeling. This could partially explain why so many clergyman, psychiatrists, psychologists, and counselors have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
Perhaps the person that diagnosed your condition was someone dealing with the many challenges of the disorder.
As briefly mentioned above those with attention deficit disorder tend to be very imaginative in the way they tackle problems and find solutions. They also tend to be naturally creative which may explain why large numbers of actors, playwrights, filmmakers, and artists have the condition. There is some speculation that the reason Di Vinci was so slow to complete his ceiling masterpieces was because he was struggling with the inattentive type of ADHD.
In conclusion, if you or someone you know has ADHD it is pretty obvious there will be many obstacles placed directly in your path on the road to success but by finding the right personal and professional niche in life your chances of success will be improved a great deal.
Additionally, many natural health minded individuals have found non-prescription alternative treatments to be an effective way to manage such common ADHD symptoms as inattention, impulsive behavior, inconsistency, and restlessness. Another advantage is that natural ADHD remedies can be used in conjunction with other non-prescription treatments such as behavioral therapy.
